Sample tag: hardwood
Good for: authenticity, adding value to your home, and a floor that can be sanded down and restored more than once.
Watch for: wet areas such as the kitchen and bathroom, and a dry-cleaning routine to keep it dry.
Chapter one
Hardwood and engineered hardwood flooring
For authenticity this is the best of the best, and it comes in two major options: hardwood and engineered hardwood.
Solid hardwood
Hardwood usually comes at the highest price point, because of how it is made. There are many types, such as oak, maple, cherry, walnut, ash and mahogany. It is a beautiful, natural-looking floor that can add a lot of value to your home, and with proper maintenance it can last up to 20 years or more.
Hardwood needs more maintenance and care than other floors. It cleans best with dry cleaning tools, because hardwood must be kept dry at all times. It is prone to scuffs and scratches, as it is still wood, but it remains a beautiful and durable choice, and it can be sanded down and restored multiple times.
Engineered hardwood
Engineered hardwood is made of a composite core, usually plywood, with a solid wood veneer on top. That veneer gives you the solid wood look you want at a lower price. It is the closest you will get to real hardwood, since the entire product is 100% real wood, and one of its biggest benefits is the layered core, which is more water resistant than real hardwood.
The last thing to consider is how wet and humid these floors can get, since that affects their durability. Avoid installing them in any wet area such as a kitchen or bathroom.
Sample tag: vinyl plank
Good for: quality, low-maintenance waterproof flooring, and homes with children or pets.
Watch for: carpet underneath: vinyl can go over most existing surfaces except carpet.
Chapter two
Vinyl, LVT, LVP and SPC
Vinyl is an excellent choice if you want quality, low-maintenance, waterproof flooring. Some lines come with a pre-attached 3-n-1 underlayment pad that acts as a sound reducer, vapor barrier and cushion. Generally, vinyl floors can be installed over most existing surfaces, with carpet the exception.
LVT and LVP
LVT and LVP (luxury vinyl tile and luxury vinyl planks) are the more traditional options, made from compressed layers of vinyl. Because vinyl is waterproof, it helps prevent the mold and mildew that cause staining and foul odor. The floating floor option is built with a click-locking system, so it is an easy DIY install. You get an authentic hardwood or tile look and feel at a lower price point.
SPC
SPC (stone polymer composite) is a newer type of flooring with extra durability and a more solid feel. It has all the same attributes as LVP and LVT, and a core of crushed limestone and polymer makes it one of the strongest waterproof floors on the market today. Its floating floor option also uses a click-locking system that keeps installation simple.
Floating, durable, family friendly
All of our LVT, LVP and SPC lines are floating floors, which means they sit directly on your subfloor, concrete or wood, and lock into place without glue or adhesive. That makes them DIY friendly. They are also extremely durable: scratch and dent resistant, waterproof, and able to last 20 years or more, which makes them a great choice if you have children or pets.
Contact us for more information on this type of flooring and we will give you our best pricing. If you do not want to DIY, we are happy to install your new floor with expert precision.
Sample tag: carpet
Good for: bedrooms, soft comfort underfoot, and the widest range of colors and patterns.
Watch for: DIY without a carpet stretcher, and skipping the annual professional cleaning.
Chapter three
Carpet
Here we move away from the wood look and feel to the softest flooring around. Of all flooring types, carpet is the most comfortable underfoot. It is made of cotton, wool or synthetic fibers such as nylon and polyester, and it offers the most room for creativity, with the largest range of colors and patterns.
It is a great choice for bedrooms, where it complements the comfort of your bed and the color and setup of the room. It is easy to clean with just vacuuming and stain-resistant carpet cleaners, and to help extend its life we recommend an annual professional cleaning.
Carpeting itself is best done by a professional. It can be a DIY project if you have the special equipment required, such as a carpet stretcher.
Sample tag: laminate
Good for: a room or house that needs a change, a warm hardwood look, and more floor for your money.
Watch for: which line you pick: some brands are water resistant and others waterproof.
Chapter four
Laminate
Laminate is a great way to spruce up a room or house that needs a change. It is easy on your feet and gives your home a warm look and feel, because it so closely resembles hardwood flooring. Since laminate is more affordable than hardwood, you end up getting more for your money.
Laminate is made of high density fiberboard, with some brands water resistant and others waterproof. The good news is that it is thick, less prone to scratches, and comes as a floating floor, so a DIY installation is a breeze.
Sample tag: tile
Good for: high foot traffic areas, kitchens and bathrooms, and floors that clean up easily.
Watch for: slip resistance: make sure the tile you select is slip resistant.
Chapter five
Tile
The last two items on the list are a bit different and special, and one is not even on the floor but on your wall. First, tile. Tile is usually associated with high foot traffic areas. It is important to know the differences and pick the right one, because not all tiles are alike. The two major types are ceramic and porcelain. Both start from a clay core, but porcelain is much denser and slightly more water resistant, since it is fired at a higher temperature.
Ceramic tile comes in more colors and larger sizes, which allows a unique floor in your bathroom or kitchen. Depending on the type you choose, it is usually less costly than porcelain.
Tile is generally much easier to clean, and in most cases a multi-purpose cleaner or mild detergent will do. Keep safety in mind and make sure the tile selected for your floors is slip resistant.
Note: all of our installations come with a 1-year warranty.
Chapter six, on the wall
Backsplash
The kitchen is truly the heart of the home. It is where we gather to cook and share, and where people are constantly going in and out. It is the epicenter of your house and it deserves to look like it. A proper backsplash is just the touch that completes this most important room.
The best part is that the materials you can use are limitless. Everything we mentioned above can work, and so can many types of stone and marble. The choice for this beautiful accent is yours: you pick the material and our experts will install it so efficiently you will wonder why you did not do it sooner.
Sample tag: backsplash
Good for: the kitchen wall, with any material above plus many types of stone and marble.
Watch for: nothing but the choice: the material is yours to pick.
