Ceramic and porcelain tile for baths, entries and porches

Tile floors and showers chosen slip resistant for the busiest wet and high-traffic spots in the house.

Ceramic or porcelain: what actually differs

The two major types of tile are ceramic and porcelain. Porcelain is much denser and slightly more water resistant, because it is fired at a higher temperature. That density is why we steer wet or hard-working spots toward porcelain.

Ceramic still has its place on lower-traffic floors and walls. Bring a photo of the room, or let us measure it at a free in-home estimate, and we will say which one makes sense for the money.

Slip resistance for baths, entries and porches

Make sure the tile selected for your floors is slip resistant. A glossy tile that looks great in a showroom can be slick under wet feet or on a rainy front step, so slip resistance comes up before color does.

That matters most in three places: the bathroom floor, the entry where everyone walks in with wet shoes, and the porch where rain meets stone.

Grout, cleaning and the porch that got a second life

Grout is the part of a tile floor you actually live with, so choose its color and the cleaner you plan to use before the install, not after. Ask us about both at the estimate.

The best proof is on this page: a cracked red quarry-tile front porch replaced with patterned grey and white porcelain right at the front door. The old tile came out first, then the porcelain went in.

Ceramic or porcelain

Porcelain is denser and slightly more water resistant. Either way, pick it slip resistant.

Tile that walks from the floor up the wall

Showers, bath floors and entries are where tile earns its keep, and they are often part of a bigger room. If the project grows past the floor, the same crew handles kitchen and bath remodeling and backsplash tile. More finished rooms are in our work.
